The University of the Southwest, an NAIA Division I intercollegiate athletic program and a proud member of the Red River Athletic Conference, announces an immediate opening for the position of Head Athletic Trainer. USW is currently one of the fastest growing intercollegiate athletic programs in the nation with the addition of 10 sport teams in the last 2 ½ years and proudly sponsors 19 NAIA intercollegiate athletic teams.

This position will be responsible for the organization, development and coordination of the USW athletic training program according to the goals and objectives of an NAIA Division I intercollegiate athletic program at the local, regional and national level. This position will develop, organize and manage the care, prevention and rehabilitation of injuries for all USW student-athletes. This position reports directly to the Vice President for Institutional Development and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics.

Specific duties and responsibilities include:

  1. Evaluate, manage and supervise the health care of student-athletes for each of USW’s sport teams.
  2. Evaluate and direct the emergency medical attention given when a student-athlete is seriously   injured in practice or competition.
  3. Plan and implement the prevention of potential injuries through conditioning programs and other preventative measures in order to have the maximum performance from each student-athlete.
  4. Plan and implement the treatment, care and rehabilitation of injuries, when they do occur, so that a student-athlete is medically cleared in order to return to competition in a timely manner.
  5. Plan and direct all in-house rehabilitation programs for all injuries so that the student-athlete can return to competition and re-injury does not occur.
  6. Organize and monitor the maintenance of all medical records, keeping each file up-to-date to facilitate insurance billing and payments by insuring proper documentation for any future medical or legal claims.
  7. Organize and direct all preseason physicals with physicians and coordinate medical clearance & eligibility for practice and competition.
  8. Act as a liaison between student-athletes, coaches and team physicians regarding medical consultation matters.
  9. Communicate to coaches the medical status of any injured student-athlete on a timely basis.
  10. Maintain knowledge of up to date techniques in the prevention, care and rehabilitation of athletic injuries by attending clinics, seminars and current periodicals.
  11. Other athletic department duties as assigned by the Vice President for Institutional Development and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics.

Position Requirements:

Bachelor’s Degree required. Master’s Degree in an appropriate field of study with a minimum of 3 years of athletic training and/or sports medicine experience at the NCAA / NAIA intercollegiate level preferred. NATA Certification, CPR and First Aid Certification are required or are to be attained by the selected candidate. Proficient computer skills are also highly preferred.

Must possess a thorough knowledge and understanding of NAIA, affiliated Conference, departmental and University compliance rules and regulations as well as a commitment to those ideals.
