SB 82 ( Mandated safety regulations)

The Texas Legislature implemented new law this past session pertaining to Safety Regulations for Certain Extracurricular Activities. This legislation has been given to the TEA to enforce, however, currently there has been no action taken on this by the agency. We do know that the following people will be affected by this legislation: a coach, athletic trainer, or sponsor of an extracurricular athletic activity; a physician who is employed by a school or school district or who volunteers to assist with an extracurricular athletic activity (documentation showing completion of CME containing emergency medicine training will most likely suffice); and a director responsible for a marching band. We also know that everyone affected will be required to have current certification in First Aid, CPR, And AED, it would also be a good idea for every school to have a hydration policy up to date and in place. Once established, the program will contain First Aid, CPR, and AED certification, emergency action planning, communication with 911 operator and emergency personnel, recognition of potentially catastrophic injuries, safety drills, and more. The agency should be taking action on this legislation in May. We will update this site as more information becomes available.
