How the TSATA Sports Medicine Courses Can Make a Difference for the Students in Your Athletic Training Program

The Texas State Athletic Trainers’ Association sponsors the Texas Education Agency approved innovative Sports Medicine Courses that can be offered for state elective credit. These two full year credit courses can make a tremendous difference to your athletic training students being able to stay in the athletic training program of their secondary school.

The students graduating in the class of 2011 are required to complete a new standard curriculum requiring a minimum of 23 credits. This new graduation requirement includes students needing 4 years of credit in the core courses, English, Math, Social Studies, and Science. This is referred to as the four by four requirements. There are other required courses for graduation credit in fine arts, computer science, health, and physical education.

Currently students only receive local credit after they have earned the (2) physical education credits in most athletic training programs. Local credits do not count toward required graduation credits or toward class rank standings for high school students. In many cases, especially when pursuing honors recognition, students are confronted with the decision of whether or not to participate in the athletic training program if they do not receive academic credit for athletic training.

Many students will not continue in the athletic training program if they only receive local credits in their final two years of high school. Receiving only local credits will cause these students to have a short fall of state credits which could also lower their class rank. The TSATA Sports Medicine Courses will help with these issues. The courses can be implemented to allow athletic training students to receive two (2) state elective credit courses as well as the two (2) physical education credits they have always received to meet graduation requirements.

School districts that offer the TSATA Sports Medicine courses must employ an instructor that is a licensed athletic trainer, in good standing, with the Texas Advisory Board of Athletic Trainers. Only licensed athletic trainers are eligible to be the instructor for these courses.

Primary goals for the Sports Medicine courses are the following:

  • 1. Provide a recruiting mechanism for recruiting and retaining students for the athletic training program.
  • 2. Establish teaching opportunities for athletic trainers to teach courses that will enhance the athletic training programs, instead of teaching regular core classes.
  • 3. Provide teaching opportunities for athletic trainers to add more staff for their schools.
  • 4. Provide more opportunities for entry level athletic training students' employment that do not have teacher certification.

The TSATA offers the Sports Medicine Instructor’s Course as a requirement of sponsoring organizations by the Texas Education Agency. This course provides curriculum goals, learning objectives, teaching resources, textbook options, and course organization. You can find complete information on the TSATA Sports Medicine Course in this section of the website.

A temporary waiver can be granted to offer Sports Medicine I by the Licensed Athletic Trainer who has registered and paid for the next available Instructor’s course. If the Licensed Athletic Trainer fails to complete the class at the next available date, a letter of noncompliance will be sent to the superintendent of the employee’s school district, and the SM I course may no longer be offered. The temporary waiver is granted to the Licensed Athletic Trainer for his/her school only in their school district.
